2024 Subaru Ascent

For 2024, the Ascent continues its role as Subaru’s flagship crossover. This capable three-row utility vehicle provides ample room for up to eight and comes standard with all-wheel drive, for confident driving all year long. It also has a turbocharged engine for brisk acceleration, which perfectly complements this SUV’s car-like handling.

Inside, the Ascent features loads of the latest technology, dominated by a large STARLINK Multimedia touchscreen. It also gets a full complement of advanced driver aids (Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology). Depending on the trim package, the second row is configured with either a bench seat for three or a pair of captain’s chairs. Either way, you’ll get generous accommodations that can easily be adjusted for passengers, cargo, or an ever-changing combination.

Trims and Powertrain

Subaru offers six versions of the 2024 Ascent: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Onyx Edition Limited, and Touring. They get the same powertrain: a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with an eight-speed manual mode and paddle shifters (steering wheel-mounted). In keeping with longtime Subaru tradition, AWD is standard, but the Onyx Edition, Limited, Onyx Edition Limited, and Touring get an upgraded AWD system with added foul-weather capability.

The Base and Premium boast an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 20 miles per gallon around town and 26 mpg on the open road; this changes to 19 city/25 highway for the higher trims. When it’s properly equipped, the Ascent can tow up to 5,000 pounds (2,000 pounds for the Base).

Standard Features

The eight-passenger Ascent Base is set up generously with tri-zone automatic climate control, LED steering-responsive headlights (the headlights adjust with steering wheel movement) with auto on/off, remote keyless entry, fabric upholstery, and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Buyers of the Premium can choose between seating for seven (with middle-row captain's chairs) or eight (middle-row bench). This trim also adds heated front seats, stain-resistant upholstery, an eight-way power driver's seat, second-row climate controls, rear privacy glass, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, side mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, and a windshield wiper de-icer.

The Onyx Edition gets the seven-passenger seating configuration plus a heated steering wheel, proximity keyless access, StarTex upholstery, a power panoramic moonroof, a power tailgate, push-button start, LED fog lights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a cargo cover, trim-specific exterior treatments, and 20-inch wheels. The Limited (with the buyer’s choice of seven or eight seats) builds off the Premium’s standard features roster with leather upholstery, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a power tailgate, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, a 12-way power driver's seat with thigh support, a four-way power front passenger seat, a driver's memory system, LED fog lights, second-row sunshades, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, special exterior treatments, and 20-inch wheels.

The seven-passenger Onyx Edition Limited is also based on the Premium trim. It gets upgrades like a power panoramic moonroof, StarTex upholstery, Onyx-themed interior and exterior touches, safety and infotainment enhancements (see the next two sections), and 20-inch wheels. The top-level Touring expands on the Limited trim with a power panoramic moonroof, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a digital rearview mirror, power-folding side mirrors, and ambient cabin lighting.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is installed in every 2024 Ascent to add pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, lane keep assist, automatic emergency steering, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, and automatic high beams. All trims except the Base get blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. Reverse automatic braking is optional on the Premium and standard on the higher trims. A driver distraction mitigation system is found on the Limited, Onyx Edition Limited, and Touring. A surround-view monitor is an option for the Limited and a standard feature on the higher trims. The Ascent’s supplemental safety equipment includes a full set of airbags, anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All 2024 Ascents have an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and text messaging support. Most trims get a six-speaker audio system, while a 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup is included with the Onyx Edition Limited and Touring (it’s optional for the Limited). All but the Base get access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Subaru STARLINK connected services (for emergency support, remote access, and other features).
