2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness
Lots of folks are excited that Subaru has added the Crosstrek to its Wilderness sub-brand of off-road
vehicles for 2024. It becomes the third model after the Outback and Forester to join the Wilderness
ranks, and like the Wilderness versions of those two Subarus, the Crosstrek variant gets a host of
features that deepen its capabilities. These enhancements include a revised drivetrain for improved
low-speed climbing, a raised suspension that affords 9.3 inches of ground clearance, a durable front
bash plate, and all-terrain tires.
The ’24 Crosstrek Wilderness also gets a special transmission oil cooler that allows its maximum towing
capacity to increase from the 1,500-pound limit of the regular Crosstrek to 3,500 lb. Plus, it gets
stronger roof racks that can hold 176 lb. when moving and 700 lb. at a standstill, allowing campers to

Powertrain and Performance
The newly introduced Crosstrek Wilderness’s hardy powertrain sets it up for success. Under its hood,
you’ll find a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (output: 182 hp and 178 lb.-ft. of torque) that works with
a Wilderness-specific continuously variable transmission (CVT) with an eight-speed manual mode. As is
customary with Subarus, all-wheel drive is standard. It’s aided by the brand’s dual-function X-MODE
system, which helps improve traction on a variety of surfaces, including dirt, deep snow, and
mud.
As we mentioned, the ’24 Crosstrek Wilderness can tow as much as 3,500 lb., which is 2,000 lb. more than
the regular Crosstrek’s. But it’s still quite fuel efficient, returning 25 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on
the highway, according to the EPA’s official determinations.
Prominent Features
The 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness’s aggressive-looking exterior is about more than just aesthetics. The
highlights among its specialized attributes are Yokohama GEOLANDER all-terrain tires on 17-inch
matte-black alloy wheels, LED steering-responsive headlights, hexagonal LED fog lights, a glare-reducing
hood decal, a windshield wiper de-icer, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, raised roof
rails (which can support 176 lb. moving and 700 lb. static), and remote keyless entry. The cabin has
heated front seats, push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, water-repellent
upholstery with unique contrast stitching, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 60/40-split rear
seatback with a folding center armrest, a rear cargo tray, and a retractable/removable cargo
cover.
The infotainment system is noteworthy, too. Its 11.6-inch touchscreen is the control center for wireless
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, a six-speaker audio system, a Wi-Fi
hotspot, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. Besides that, the Crosstrek Wilderness gets
a dual front and rear USB ports (two Type-A and two Type-C). Its main options are a power-adjustable
driver’s seat, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a moonroof.
Advanced Safety Tech
Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist technology suite comes standard in the Crosstrek Wilderness, providing adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. It also receives automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, and hill descent control.
