Trims, Powertrains, and Performance
If you like having options, the 2024 Outback will be right up your alley. This five-passenger crossover is made in nine trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT. Most of those get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 182 hp and 176 lb.-ft. of torque, but the XT grades and Wilderness Edition receive a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine generating 260 hp and 277 lb.-ft. of torque. Both are connected to a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and in fitting with the Subaru custom, all-wheel drive is standard. Outbacks with the 2.5-liter engine can tow up to 2,700 pounds, while those with the turbocharged 2.4-liter are able to pull as much as 3,500 lb.
The EPA has officially estimated that the 2.5-liter Outbacks achieve 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway; with the XT grades, fuel efficiency dips slightly to 23 city/30 highway. The Wilderness Edition is a tad thirstier, returning 22 city/26 highway.
Base
This lowest-priced Outback will surprise you with its eight cup and bottle holders plus advanced features such as automatic climate control, LED steering-responsive headlights, remote keyless entry, and LED fog lights. It also gets raised roof rails, power windows with front-row auto-up/down, a front-row USB-A data port, illuminated vanity mirrors, a 60/40-split folding rear seatback, and a cargo area with an underfloor storage compartment and removable tray. Its infotainment system uses a 7-inch touchscreen to manage the smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming.
In addition to traction-enhancing AWD coming standard, the Base is set up with the Subaru EyeSight driver assist technology suite, bundling advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. High beam assist (automatic high beams) is included, too.
Premium
The Premium adds windshield and rear wiper de-icers, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, three additional USB ports (one Type-A and two Type-C), dual-zone automatic climate control, and a retractable/removable cargo cover. An 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with six speakers becomes standard at this level, as do a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone connection. Blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert may be added to the safety technology array.
Onyx Edition & Onyx Edition XT
These two trims both have the same equipment except that the Onyx Edition XT gets the more powerful engine. Their exteriors have a different appearance from the rest of the lineup, thanks to black exterior cladding. They also receive proximity keyless entry, a heated steering wheel, water-repellent StarTex upholstery, a hands-free liftgate, a moonroof, push-button ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and auto-up/down on every window. These trims also get the 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connect and an upgrade to a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Reverse automatic braking and blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert join the roster of safety technologies.
Limited & Limited XT
The Limited and Limited XT differ from each other only in that the XT gets the higher-horsepower engine. These trims do not get the moonroof or heated steering wheel as standard features, but those items may be added as options. The included enhancements at this level are improved front seats, leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, driver’s position memory settings, and a power passenger’s seat. All of the previously mentioned infotainment and advanced safety technologies are standard; Subaru’s DriverFocus distraction mitigation system is optional on the Limited and standard on the Limited XT.
Touring & Touring XT
The Touring returns the moonroof and heated steering wheel as standard features (along with everything else previously mentioned) and is further upgraded with ventilated front seats, premium Nappa leather upholstery, power-folding side mirrors, and a digital rearview mirror. Reverse automatic braking is standard. Once again, the XT is distinguished by the stronger engine, but they are otherwise equipped the same. That includes the addition of Subaru’s DriverFocus distraction mitigation system to the safety technology bundle.
Wilderness Edition
The Wilderness Edition drops the moonroof and digital rearview mirror but is equipped with the more powerful engine, all-terrain tires, exclusive hexagonal LED fog lights, higher-weight-capacity roof rails, and water-repellent upholstery. It’s further set apart with 9.5 inches of ground clearance instead of the 8.7 inches found on the other trims. Subaru offers an optional package for the Wilderness that contains a power moonroof, reverse automatic emergency braking, and navigation.
